The Whole Truth, Nothing but the Truth so help me God:

got questionsImagine a courtroom where you and I and a whole multitude of individuals are going through a judgement.  Imagine that there is one judge who is so bright that the human eye cannot see and so awe-inspiring that we cannot gaze upon that judge without feeling like we would die - let's call that complete holiness.what will happenNow let's imagine in this giant courtroom that we see mighty looking creatures that are around a book who has a man who looks very familiar looking through that book.  His gaze is very piercing and he has this clear and precise glow about him reminding us of a lamb and a lion - his hands and feet are worn with a scare that were clearly pierced for transgressions.

Judgement-Seat-of-Christ-Sermon-Title-570x428Now imagine in that book are written names who have said with their mouths, their tongues and their confessions:  "That is the whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help me God."  Now imagine that those that their names are not written in that book are called out for all of their transgressions, all of their lies and all of the things that separate them from this eternal heaven - sending them to a fiery lake of fire that was intended for the devil and his fallen angels.

whole truthNow imagine that the attention focuses on you and all eyes both from humans, angels and the throne are bearing down on you, then the voice speaks, "Do you know my Son?  Is your name written in the Book of Life? If you answer yes and your name is written in that Book - Praise God! Praise Him for his Son, His Spirit and His Holiness that abounds throughout all of the earth to see.

Suppose your answer is, "I don't know" or even worse, your name is not there?  Then what?  Matthew 7:21-23 (NIV)

Reflecting on end of last year’s Bucket List

2013 to 2014Last year, on Saturday 12-29-12 I entered the following bucket list post for my look into 2013.  Here is what I said:James 4:13-16 ESV “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.”

Every one of us will have an appointed time to die and after that we will all face judgement from our Lord Jesus Christ.  This very fact got me thinking about a bucket list for 2013.  It is not so much as planning to die, but things that I really want to focus on in the next 12 months to come.  Things that I think are seriously important:

My Bucket List for 2013:

1.       Read thru the Bible in a year (I am currently 2 months behind, but getting closer)

2.       Lead 12 people to Christ (at least one a month) (I know of 4 for sure and not sure how many more this side of heaven)

3.       Love my wife and family more and serve them more – (Check)

4.       Buy a homeless person dinner  (FAIL, however, we did support a family that was in need during the holidays)

5.       Spend more time teaching, loving, training and hanging with my wife and three kids (Check)

6.       Mentoring (Check and triple check)

7.       Take random road “day trips” with my family (Check)

8.       Train and run for my third marathon (Check)

9.       Eat better, exercise more and make the wise choices (I will give myself a C+, without the Marathon it would have been a “C-“)

10.     Read more with my wife (give myself a C+)

11.     Grow deeper friendships (feeling blessed with this thanks to Men of Faith and Lance, of course)

12.     Apply biblical truth every day to my life, my wife’s life and my children’s life (more family devotions). (One of my accountability partners put the rubber to the road on this one with me by challenging to hold my integrity to my every day life application – thus fulfilling this challenge)

The hardest part about this website is that Lance and I (and Gary who is now home with Jesus) have to look at this website as a constant reminder of accountability.  That is, our wives, friends, and family are reading this.  They see us daily and can call us out on this and they can even challenge us to live lives more worthy and to be even more accountable in life.

 

 

 

 

So as 2013 comes to a close, I have a few challenges for you:

  • The demands of life are inescapable, therefore, measure your time more carefully and prioritize what’s most important:  God, Family, Church, Work and Community
  • The pressures of life are, at times, overwhelming, therefore, measure your friendships and accountability more closely (if people were to look at your life and social calendar and check book on a jumbo screen at your most favorite sporting event and or Times Square – would they say that God matters most?  That Jesus shines through?  That the Holy Spirit guides us each day?
  • The family unit is exhausting (a lot of the time), therefore, live like it is your last day, love like it is your last day and serve like you love Jesus on your last day
  • Maybe you are divorced, single and/or widowed, therefore, stop trying to serve self (what’s in it for me) and allow God to fill those places by serving His will and His Kingdom and His plans for your life (He does have plans for each of us)
  • Maybe you are married and embittered or frustrated or in a rut that you cannot get out of (like a dog chasing its tail), therefore, turn to God’s will for your life.  Center your life, your marriage, your job your everything-ness on Jesus Christ.  Make him your center point and see what 2014 brings you.

For many of us, we were blessed to enjoy a Christmas Eve Service at our church.  Our kids were able to be part of the Candlelight song and worship time.   The anticipation building to a wonderful night of hope and excitement.  You can listen to them in their beds excited for what presents may come in the morning.  Can you feel it in the air?  Can you tell that something is different this time of year?  Christmas lights, decorations and giddy children are anticipating Christmas Day - the days when all the mayhem and excitement is met with huge anticipation and glee and then in a flash and just a moment all the presents are unwrapped and devoured.  Presents are played with for the ensuing weeks and some, even some, can last a very long time.

I often think about the gift of salvation with a God who understands that there is nothing that we could have done, could do, or will ever be able to do to bring us closer and justified to a Holy God.  So, knowing this, and knowing all of our shortcomings - we cannot be trusted - we sin every day - God does the unimaginable and sends his Son to earth to be born of a virgin in a lowly manger (a manger which feeds animals) to bear the sin of the world.  As I unwrap this present throughout the year, I cannot help but think that this is a God who I want to know more and more everyday.   This is the Son who I want to shine his light to the world.  He deserves it!  He alone - earns it.  jesus birth

As a legacy dad, I hope to be able to instill the importance of this gift to my children.  I pray to God that He will call them to be his and that they will do more than accept this gift - I pray that they will live this gift to the fullest.

I cannot help but think and believe in my heart that this truly is the best Christmas Present ever:  Jesus Christ, Savior of the world!

Lately, especially in the media and social networks, I feel that a person is truly not afforded his or her constitutional rights of freedom.  Too often then not a person is dragged through the mud both in public and through the media without a fair shake.  For instance, Phil Robertson, of the Duck Dynasty, has been removed from the successful television show - Duck Dynasty.  He was asked for his views on sin and here is what he said.  According to an article published in the:

Why did this happen? The family at the center of A&E's 'Duck Dynasty' said they may not be able to go on without clan patriarch Phil Robertson. His remarks on homosexuality illustrate a cultural divide in America.   By Patrik Jonsson, Staff Writer / December 20, 2013

The Christian Science Monitor, Weekly Digital Edition.  In a statement issued late Thursday, the Robertson clan at the center of the show said they may not be able to go on after A&E suspended Phil Robertson for his blunt AS YOU KNOW CINDY, THIS IS MY FAVORITE PIC. THX.scriptural interpretations. “We have had a successful working relationship with A&E, but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm,” the Robertson family said in a prepared statement. “We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty.” Robertson’s commentary, where he compares homosexuality to sins like “bestiality,” sparked a wildfire debate in the blogosphere about free speech, civil rights, and religious values. The flap also has come to epitomize what some academics have identified as a cultural gulf separating America’s coastal urban power centers and a rural America that remains steeped in hunting, fishing, and churchgoing. “This moment definitely says something about where we are as Americans,” says Rob Weiner, a pop culture expert at Texas Tech University. “For so long … the more traditional sort of down-home Christian good ol’ boy, living off the land, hasn’t been seen. Now that he has, he’s touched a nerve. A lot of people find the show entertaining, but equal numbers of people find it offensive – the killing of animals and things like that.” Gay rights advocates, for one, applauded the decision by A&E to suspend Phil. “What’s clear is that such hateful anti-gay comments are unacceptable to fans, viewers, and networks alike,” said GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz. “By taking quick action and removing Robertson from future filming, A&E has sent a strong message that discrimination is neither a Christian nor an American value.” But the backlash caused its own backlash from Duck Dynasty fans, who asked why, in a country founded on Judeo-Christian precepts, is someone being punished for artfully stating scripture? “We all need to be out there promoting and protecting the heart of America,” said Sarah Palin. “We can do that by showing support for ‘Duck Dynasty.’ ”

Here is one question for you, are the laws in a country promoted by inherent values that are granted to us by God of the universe?  How and where are we given this moral compass to forge laws in our nations?  By what inherent right do we have to force laws on people?  Where, from the age of 3, do we get this sense of right and wrong from?

When was homosexuality illegal in all 50 states?  According to Wikipedia (yes, I just quoted Wikipedia), "Sodomy laws in the United States:  From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, Sodomy laws in the United States, which outlawed a variety of sexual acts, were historically universal. While they often targeted sexual acts between persons of the same-sex, many statutes employed definitions broad enough to outlaw certain sexual acts between persons of different sexes as well, sometimes even acts between married persons.  Through the 20th century, the gradual liberalization of American sexual morals led to the elimination of sodomy laws in most states. During this time, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of sodomy laws in Bowers v. Hardwick in 1986. However, in 2003 the Supreme Court reversed the decision with Lawrence v. Texas, invalidating sodomy laws in the remaining 14 states (Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Virginia). Prior to 1962, sodomy was a felony in every state, punished by a lengthy term of imprisonment and/or hard labor. In that year, the Model Penal Code (MPC) — developed by the American Law Institute to promote uniformity among the states as they modernized their statutes."  This isn't conjecture, nor an opinion, but actual laws in the United States of America that were against sodomy.

So this begs the question of our Bill of Rights given to us by our founding fathers:  Why should any citizen of the United States be condemned or shunned for his or her right to freedom of speech?  I will put it this way:  As a consumer and a taxpayer, if there is anything that I do not like then I have choices:  1) I can choose not to endorse that product or politician 2) I can avoid that person or product or go to their competitor which offers a different service or political view 3) I can choose to turn him/her or that show off.  So, in the case of Phil Robertson, if what he says offended any of you - then simply choose not to support their show on A&E.

For me, I think the Book of James 1:19 says it best, "19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,".  We live in a world that is rapidly changing, but we are not seeing any new themes coming from a worldly perspective.  In the days of the Roman Empire there was a multitude of un-biblical practices around, and throughout generations upon generations sinful behaviors and practices became public norm.  Am I going to become the moral compass for everyone around me - God forbid me!

Here is the truth in all things:  God is Holy!  God is not mocked.  It is appointed for man (and woman) once to die and after this judgement.  We read in Scripture that if you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior that there is no Salvation for you - there is only the Great White Throne Judgement that does not end well for those without Christ.

For me, if asked a tough or political leaning question - I would be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.  I would rather hope that my light would shine - the light of Jesus Christ in my life.  I would hope that my first response would be to share the gospel of Christ in love (not in condemnation).  Does that mean that I should withhold the truth - absolutely not.  But does that mean that I can cast stones in other peoples lives when I have giant logs sticking out my own eyes - I would hope not.

I am a sinner!  I sin everyday!  I ask for forgiveness from God when I do sin.  Because I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior, my sins of the past, the present and in the future - are forgiven once and for all - To God be the Glory for His Son Jesus Christ.

Top 10 things to do before Christmas Day

top-10-620x620top-10-filmstop-10-620x620It's Christmas time again.  It is time to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  I find it funny how we (society) spends just over 4 weeks getting ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  Actually, in the last 10 years I would venture to state that pure secularism and commercialism has made this Season more and more about ourselves and what "I" want versus the reason for the Season:  Jesus!So, that being said, I decided to make a top 10 list of things to do before Christmas (for Legacy Dads):

  1. Read Luke 2 (to your family and friends)
  2. Shop for a charity (Angels of Hope or any notable charity and teach your family the value of giving
  3. Help a family struggling this season - Sponsor a family in need (you can do this discreetly or ask  your church office for permission to contact someone in need)
  4. Donate your time, talent and treasure this season to Jesus - think on these things first before yourselves
  5. Give love and time to your loved ones
  6. Serve your wife everyday when you come home from work (we call this the "SECOND SHIFT" - thanks Matt Chandler)
  7. Serve your kids everyday -give them your attention and time all the way up to bedtime - read stories, play tag, play a board game, tell them about Jesus and the God's love Story
  8. Read the bible every day
  9. Pray every day
  10. Listen to the Holy Spirit (they quiet voice in you nudging you to do God's will and not your own

My Own Worst Enemy

I was cold, distant and angry.  On the surface, everything seemed fine, you’d get a smile and greeting, but inside my head, I was waging a battle.  Everything appeared wonderful: house, cars, kids, and great career.  Why then did my heart tell me that it was all a waste and I was a complete failure?Worst.001

This past weekend I turned 37 and once again, I struggled with my own inner demon called Noise (See Ephesians 6:12).  I reflected over the past 15 years of my life.  I’ve spent that time providing for my family, defending my country and rising to the top of my career.  Most people would feel content but my heart and emotions screamed that I had missed my calling.

I’ve made many mistakes in life and most certainly did not take the easiest path.  I’ve overcome educational, financial and marital issues and rose to the top 1% of my career field.  Most of my colleagues love their job and feel complete satisfaction knowing that we are secure in a six-figure income and will always have job opportunities waiting for us.  Despite obtaining the world’s definition of success, my heart felt empty inside and I feel like these accomplishments will ultimately end up in God’s dumpster because God doesn’t care how much money we’ve made or the titles we’ve obtained.  He looks at how we’ve loved others and used our lives to glorify him.

My heart lies in ministry, working with families and making a difference in people's lives.  But my day job is light years from that calling.  I work with 98% atheists and agnostics who are happy and content living in the world’s definition of success and only seeking personal pleasure and gratification.  For me, the Christian anomaly who has a heart for God and true greatness by God’s standards, it feels like I’m stuck here in purgatory for the next 6 years.  I’ve turned down ministry positions in the past and each time, I’ve regretted it.  Each time I wonder if the grass is greener on the other side and my heart would be filled with joy living my calling each day.

Before I continue on my pity party let me stop right here and offer some logical advice that I’ve heard multiple times and my brother Dante reminded me of this past weekend.  The grass is not greener and God uses us wherever we are.  If I’d spent the past 15 years working in ministry, I might be burnt out now.  If I hadn’t chosen the path I did, I would not have the life stories, experiences and trials to share with others and may not have a passion for this ministry at all.

God is shaping us wherever we are in our lives.  Right now, I’m digging ditches and waiting for the time when He calls me to full-time ministry.  I have 6 more years and I can continue to listen to Noise and feel like I'm wasting my life or I can choose to use this time wisely and my current place as a way to minister to others and glorify God.  Maybe I haven’t experienced something yet or God has some more molding to do with me before I am ready?  Whatever it may be, I need to use everyday and every situation as a way to learn, love, grow and reach others.

Will my old friend Noise be back in a few days to once again start playing my emotions and pulling on my heartstrings?  Probably.  But I’ll continue to put on my armor and wage this battle with him because I know that for as he thinketh in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7)  While God continues to reveal and  refine the storyline of my life, I can rejoice because I already know the closing scene. The good guys win, Christ returns and at last I will get to bask in his glory and love for the rest of eternity.  Thank You God!

God grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful worldas it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things rightif I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this lifeand supremely happy with Himforever in the next. Amen.
