When you put legacy dad in perspective we have to reflect on how important leaving a legacy becomes from generation to generation. This weekend is the "Super Bowl" of Christianity. As we celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus, we celebrate Easter for the death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.
Tomorrow is Good Friday in the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He was beaten, scourged and hung on a tree for sin and crimes that he did not commit. He stood in our place and for as judgement as the ultimate priest of the order of Melchizadek. No longer would we need animal sacrifice to atone for our sins as Christ is the perfect lamb who through his blood we have a new covenant. He has done it all for us. He has taken the wrath of God from us. He paid the price once and for all.
As Legacy Dad prods our fellow dads with thoughts of the long-term dimension of fatherhood, we do so believing God the Father, is our gold standard. Of course. But, don't assume it. Get serious about it, practice what it takes to truly follow Him. Do you hear me ready to be metaphorical? Follow the Wild Goose. He indwells those who've invited Christ "in" to their life as Savior. God put part of His very own Self in us.
The independent streak built into the American character by our wild west heritage can work against best practices fathering. We need help, but books, conferences, and pastors' declarations don't fill the bill. This weekend, Legacy Dads, the three of us, are meeting to bond, to encourage, to share and to grow our fathering savvy. Join us.
I wrote Overprotective Parents, Underdeveloped Children: Part 1 over two years ago yet it still seems to be a popular post on this site. I would now like to take the time to address this issue again and also add some insight and wisdom (if you can call it that) that I have gleaned over the past two years working with and teaching to Overprotective Parents.
Your heart sometimes just won't stay still as you think of the children of your legacy and the challenges and the troubles they'll face. So you pray. They run, they play, they bump into things and owies are abundant. So you pray. They do bad things and you wish for them better. So you pray. We talk about "Grandmother's Prayers." Fathers and grandfathers pray, too. The effect is an investment in their legacy.
